Craiglockhart Terrace entrance to Easter Craiglockhart Hill Local Nature Reserve
This area was used as a curling rink for many decades up to the Second World War. The rink fell into disrepair and was covered with a whindust surface in 1998.
Despite a recent ‘tidy-up’, this important entrance area does not provide a very attractive welcome to the woods and the pond beyond. A slab path was laid down in 2001 but it is now in poor repair. There are access problems, especially in bad weather and especially for people with mobility difficulties.
The Friends of Craiglockhart Woods and Nature Trail together with Edinburgh Council have produced a Development Plan for the curling rink area. We think the area would be greatly improved if:
- The slab path was replaced
- Wildflower meadows were created instead of the grassed areas
- Fruit trees were planted at the entrance
- The whin area was kept for community events such as fetes but the playing of petanque (French bowls) was encouraged
Over the next couple of months, we will consult in various different ways with the users of the curling rink area and with the people who live in the surrounding community.
