The Friends of Craiglockhart Woods and Nature Trail (FCWNT) were invited to participate in the consultation and our response is outlined bleow:

“The Friends of Craiglockhart Woods and Nature Trail (FCWNT) are in favour of a combination of options 2 and 4a. This would initially involve the Council taking ownership of the entire Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and the woodland and open space currently owned by the Craighouse Partnership that is not part of the LNR.

The Council would then work to achieve designation of an expanded LNR that would include the 2 woodland areas marked 3 and 4 on the map (.pdf 426.86 KB) and also work to achieve an appropriate designation for the open grass area marked 5 on the map. FCWNT would then be in support of a transition of this enlarged LNR into ownership and management by the community over a period of time  if proper organisation and adequate funding can be achieved to allow the community to take over the management of the LNR.

The preference stated should not be regarded as either an expression of support or of opposition to the current, or any future, proposals that relate to Craiglockhart Hill by The Craighouse Partnership or any other Property Developer.”

Friends of Craighouse Grounds and Wood
Now that Craighouse has been sold to developers, help preserve the beautiful grounds and woods for the public.

We are very keen to get find some good quality images of “Happy Valley” in the days when the dance hall, boating pond and curling rinks were still major attractions, so roughly the period  from 1890′s through to the 1950′s

If you have any images taken at these times please contact us as we would be very interested in taking a look at them. If your pictures are suitable they could be included on the History Board and we would be happy to acknowledge you as one of contributors.

The Annual General Meeting of the Friends of Craiglockhart Woods and Nature Trail will take place on Tuesday 5th March 2013 at 7.00 for 7.30. Refreshments will be available from 7.00pm. The AGM will start at 7.30.

You are invited to come along and to hear about what has been happening in Easter Craiglockhart Hill Local Nature Reserve over the last year, to hear what is planned and to have your say on how you would like to see future development.

Nature Detectives is organised by the Woodland Trust.

And learn we did. The knowledge and passion of our guide, Anna of Floramedica, inspired us all. The woods will never be the same again. Now we have the courage and the knowledge to boldly seek out exotic leaves for our salads, to find cures for our ailments and to gather berries and flowers for our teas, tinctures, jams and alcoholic tipples. We are foraging converts.

We finished our exploration by consuming a tasty smorgasbord of bread, cheese and foraged leaves. Betty and Paul Geissler had kindly invited us all in to their home for the lunch to escape from the chill blasts of autumn.

A great time was had by everyone. We plan to make the ‘Foragers Walk’ into an annual event – perhaps in the spring next time. Come and join the foragers and learn about the hidden treasures of the woods.

Please come along and join us with Anna of Floramedica on a sociable walk on the wild side in Craiglockhart Woods to identify and collect some nutritious seasonal plants and explore their history, lore and uses past and present.

Wear sensible outdoor clothing and footwear and bring along a sandwich and a sense of adventure.
